Temperament and personality

French Bulldogs are affectionate, playful clowns that want to be wherever you are. They are quiet, rarely bark, and adapt easily to apartment life. Frenchies can be stubborn, but they are food-motivated, which makes short, upbeat training sessions effective.

Size and lifespan

Adults weigh under 28 pounds and stand 11 to 13 inches tall. Life expectancy is 10 to 12 years. Because of the breed's build, most litters are delivered by C-section, which is one reason puppies cost more than many other small breeds.

Grooming and shedding

The short coat is easy: a weekly brush and the occasional bath. The skin folds on the face and the tail pocket need wiping and drying a few times a week to prevent infection. Shedding is moderate.

Exercise and training

A couple of short walks and some play are enough. Frenchies overheat quickly, so avoid exercise in hot or humid weather and never leave them in a car. Most cannot swim; keep them away from pools without a life vest.

Health considerations

• Brachycephalic airway syndrome (BOAS): narrowed nostrils and airway cause snoring, heat intolerance, and in severe cases surgery.
• Spine problems: hemivertebrae and intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).
• Allergies and skin fold dermatitis.
• Hip dysplasia, cherry eye, and patellar luxation.

Air travel in cargo is refused by most airlines for this breed; plan on ground transport or in-cabin flights only.

Is a French Bulldog right for your family?

Excellent with children and other pets, and happy in small homes. They are not a fit for runners, hot climates without air conditioning, or owners who want a low-maintenance dog: vet costs for the breed are above average.

What does a French Bulldog puppy cost?

French Bulldog puppies in the United States commonly list between $2,500 and $5,000, with "exotic" colors such as blue, lilac, or merle priced higher. Note that merle and some dilute colors carry extra health risks and are not accepted in the breed standard.

Questions to ask a French Bulldog breeder

• Have the parents been evaluated for breathing (BOAS grading) and spine (X-rays for hemivertebrae)?
• What OFA or equivalent tests do the parents have: hips, patellas, cardiac, eyes?
• Was the puppy DNA-tested for common French Bulldog conditions such as DM, JHC, and HUU?
• Can I see the mother, and how were the puppies socialized?
• What does the health guarantee cover, and for how long?
