German Shepherds are confident, courageous, and deeply loyal working dogs. They are naturally watchful with strangers and devoted to their family, and they need a job: obedience, scent work, agility, or structured daily training. Under-stimulated Shepherds invent their own work, usually the destructive kind.
Males weigh 65 to 90 pounds and stand 24 to 26 inches; females 50 to 70 pounds and 22 to 24 inches. Life expectancy is 7 to 10 years according to the breed standard, with many well-bred dogs living into their early teens.
Expect heavy shedding all year and dramatic seasonal coat blows. Brush several times a week, daily in spring and fall, and invest in a good vacuum. Baths are only needed occasionally.
This breed needs a minimum of one to two hours of exercise and mental work every day. They are exceptionally trainable and excel at almost everything, but early, broad socialization is essential so their protective instinct stays balanced.
Great for active households and experienced owners who will commit to training. Well-socialized Shepherds are gentle with their own children but may be aloof with visitors. Working lines are more intense than show lines; ask the breeder which they produce.
German Shepherd puppies in the United States usually list between $1,000 and $3,000. Titled working lines and European imports can cost considerably more. Budget for training classes and large-breed food.
