Temperament and personality

The Maltese is a gentle, affectionate lapdog that has been a companion breed for more than two thousand years. They are playful and surprisingly fearless for their size, follow their people from room to room, and dislike being left alone for long stretches.

Size and lifespan

Adults weigh under 7 pounds and stand 7 to 9 inches. A well-cared-for Maltese usually lives 12 to 15 years.

Grooming and shedding

The single, silky white coat sheds very little, which is why many allergy sufferers do well with the breed. It does mat easily: brush daily if you keep it long, or ask a groomer for a "puppy cut" every six to eight weeks. Wipe the eyes daily to limit tear staining.

Exercise and training

A short walk and indoor play meet their needs. Maltese are bright but can be slow to house train; a consistent schedule and crate routine help. Early socialization keeps their alert nature from turning into nuisance barking.

Health considerations

Luxating patella and dental crowding, common to toy breeds.
Hypoglycemia in very small puppies: feed several small meals a day.
Portosystemic (liver) shunt: ask whether the puppy's bile acids were checked.
Heart valve disease later in life and "white shaker syndrome" (tremors).

Is a Maltese right for your family?

Ideal for adults, seniors, and families with calm older children. At under 7 pounds they can be injured by a fall or a rough toddler, so supervise young kids closely. They coexist well with other small, gentle pets.

What does a Maltese puppy cost?

Maltese puppies in the United States typically list between $1,500 and $4,000. Be skeptical of "teacup" marketing: puppies bred far below the standard weight face more health problems, not fewer.
