Temperament and personality

Pomeranians are bold, curious toy dogs with a big-dog attitude. They are alert and vocal, which makes them excellent little watchdogs but also means barking needs to be shaped early. Most Poms bond tightly with one or two people, love being the center of attention, and do well in apartments as long as they get daily play and short walks.

Size and lifespan

Adults weigh 3 to 7 pounds and stand 6 to 7 inches at the shoulder. With good care a Pomeranian typically lives 12 to 16 years, so plan for a long commitment.

Grooming and shedding

The signature double coat sheds moderately year-round and heavily during seasonal coat blows. Brush two to three times a week to prevent mats behind the ears and under the legs, and expect a full groom every four to six weeks if you keep the coat long. Shaving a Pom is not recommended: the coat may grow back patchy.

Exercise and training

Two short walks and some indoor play cover their needs. Poms are smart and pick up tricks quickly, but house training takes patience with a bladder this small. Use a harness rather than a collar to protect the trachea.

Health considerations

• Luxating patella: kneecaps that slip out of place, common in toy breeds.
• Tracheal collapse: a honking cough, aggravated by collar pressure.
• Dental disease: crowded teeth need brushing and regular cleanings.
• Alopecia X ("black skin disease"): cosmetic hair loss seen in the breed.
• Hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia in very small puppies.

Is a Pomeranian right for your family?

Poms are a great fit for adults, seniors, and families with older children. They are fragile, so homes with toddlers should wait or supervise every interaction. They tolerate other pets when introduced young but often prefer to be the boss.

In the United States, Pomeranian puppies from health-tested parents usually list between $1,000 and $3,000. Show-quality lines and rare colors can run higher. Budget separately for grooming, dental care, and a quality small-breed food.

Questions to ask a Pomeranian breeder

• Have both parents been checked for patellar luxation and heart conditions?
• What do the parents weigh? Be cautious with "teacup" claims below 3 pounds.
• Can I meet the mother and see where the puppies are raised?
• What vaccines and deworming has the puppy had, and when is the next round due?
• Does the contract include a health guarantee and a return policy?
