The Toy Poodle is the smallest of the three Poodle varieties and shares their intelligence, athleticism, and people-focused nature. Toys are lively, quick to learn, and thrive on attention and games. They can be reserved with strangers and need early socialization to stay confident.
Toy Poodles stand 10 inches or under at the shoulder and usually weigh 4 to 6 pounds. They are long-lived, with a typical lifespan of 10 to 18 years.
The curly coat sheds very little and is one of the most allergy-friendly options among dogs, but it is high maintenance: brush it several times a week to prevent mats and schedule a clip every four to six weeks. Keep the ears clean and dry; the hair inside the ear canal traps moisture.
Daily walks and play satisfy their physical needs, but their minds need work too. Toy Poodles excel at trick training, agility, and obedience and pick up new cues in a handful of repetitions. Bored Poodles bark.
A wonderful match for adults, seniors, apartment dwellers, and families with gentle older children. Their small size makes them vulnerable around toddlers and large dogs. They do best in homes where someone is around most of the day.
Toy Poodle puppies from health-tested parents commonly list between $1,500 and $3,500 in the United States. Rare colors and show lines cost more. Factor in lifelong grooming costs when comparing breeds.
