Yorkshire Terriers pack a true terrier personality into a 7-pound frame: bold, curious, affectionate, and convinced they are much bigger than they are. Yorkies are devoted to their people, make alert watchdogs, and enjoy being carried around as much as they enjoy a walk.
Adults weigh up to 7 pounds and stand 7 to 8 inches. Life expectancy is 11 to 15 years.
The Yorkie's coat is fine and hair-like, sheds very little, and is often tolerated by people with allergies. Long "show" coats need daily brushing; most owners choose a short puppy cut with grooming every four to six weeks. Small mouths mean crowded teeth: brush them and plan on professional cleanings.
Short walks and indoor play are enough. Yorkies are quick learners but independent, and house training can take longer than with larger breeds. Use a harness instead of a collar to protect the windpipe.
Well suited to adults, seniors, and families with school-age children who understand how to handle a small dog. They adapt to apartments and travel easily. Very young children and large, rough dogs are a risk to a dog this size.
Yorkie puppies in the United States typically list between $1,200 and $3,000. Ignore "teacup" premiums: extremely small puppies are more fragile and more expensive to keep healthy.
